Since 1974
A room behind
the fish market.
Rose Trewin opened this room with four tables and one grill, mostly to feed the men unloading boxes across the road. The menu was whatever had not sold at auction, which is more or less still the arrangement.
Her grandson runs it now. There are twelve tables, eight of them under the awning outside, and the same grill — rebuilt twice, in the same corner.
The long table came out of a chapel on Fore Street when it was cleared in 1981. It seats ten, it does not match anything else in the room, and we have never tried to make it.

Finding us
Walk to the market halls and go around the back, towards the water. We are the doorway with the blue paint and no sign. Parking on the quay, a four-minute walk.
The people you will meet
Nate
At the grill
Rose's grandson. Buys at the market at six, sleeps in the afternoon, will not discuss the octopus.
Cass
Front of house
Keeps the book, remembers which table you sat at last time, and decides who gets the terrace when it rains.
Bea
Bread and sweets
In at five to make the custards. Everything sweet on the menu is hers, and there is only ever as much as she made.
